What Are Coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common to many species of animals. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people, as seen with the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV), Middle-East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV), and most recently the severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) coronaviruses. Coronaviruses are RNA viruses possessing an envelope, or outer coating, that is composed of a lipid layer (fat-like substance that is water insoluble). The envelope is needed to aid in attachment of the virus to the host cell, and with loss of the envelope comes a loss of infectivity.

Are Ladybug® Products Effective Against SARS-CoV-2?

There are no available test strains of SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19. That said, products that have been tested and proven effective on either a harder-to-kill virus, such as canine parvovirus, or a similar human coronavirus, such as coronavirus 229E, are expected to be effective according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Our steam vapor systems equipped with TANCS® (EPA Est. No. 82121-WA-01) satisfy both requirements:

  • Human coronavirus 229E (≥99.94% reduction in 3 seconds)
  • Harder-to-kill viruses, such as canine parvovirus (≥99.99% reduction in 7 seconds)

But it is important to pay attention to disinfection times because most people don’t disinfect properly. A chemical disinfectant needs to remain on a surface, often for several minutes, before it dries or is wiped off. In contrast, our TANCS®-equipped steam vapor systems are proven in peer-review format to disinfect in 7 seconds or less.
